How much is that card worth anyway?

NFL Market Movers: Jalen Hurts Continues Hobby Breakout

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has been a hobby favorite with high upside since joining the NFL in 2020, but his explosive start to 2022 has pushed his cards to the top of the market over the last month.

Along with Hurts, here’s a look at the NFL card market’s top risers and decliners, according to Market Movers data.

Cards listed below are PSA 10s with a minimum of 10 sales over the last 30 days.

PRICE GROWTH PERCENTAGE RISERS

1. Jalen Hurts Illusions Base PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ 243%

2. Tua Tagovailoa 2020 Mosaic NFL Debut PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ 210%

3. Jalen Hurts 2020 Donruss Canvas PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ 180%

4. Lamar Jackson 2019 Select Field Level Silver PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ 144%

5. Jalen Hurts 2020 Phoenix Fire Burst PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ 116%

HOBBY FAVORITE HURTS: Like what we saw with Tua Tagovailoa last week, sometimes a player’s popularity in the hobby jumps so quickly that collectors scramble to grab any card they can — that’s what we’re seeing with Jalen Hurts.

His rookies from Prizm, Select and Optic will remain his flagship cards, but seeing cards like Illusions and his Donruss Canvas in this space tells us that collectors are either searching for value or hunting for low-pop options. That Illusions Base started around just $14 in a PSA 10 and has jumped to a new average of around $35.

Expect Hurts to remain a regular in this space if the Eagles continue their hot start and Hurts continues his breakout season.

PRICE GROWTH PERCENTAGE DECLINERS

1. Mac Jones 2021 Donruss Press Proof Premium PSA 10 πŸ“‰ 74%

2. Mitch Trubisky 2017 Prizm Silver PSA 10 πŸ“‰ 73%

3. Davis Mills 2021 Prizm Base PSA 10 πŸ“‰ 72%

4. Justin Fields 2021 Prizm Base PSA 10 πŸ“‰ 71%

5. Davis Mills 2021 Donruss Base PSA 10 πŸ“‰ 71%

FIELDS DROPS: Chicago Bears fans were excited when the team first selected Justin Fields 11th overall in that 2021 NFL Draft, but unfortunately he’s been far from the savior at QB everyone was hoping for. Fields isn’t exactly surrounded by top-tier weapons, but the hobby may be losing faith quickly anyway.

Most collectors will be happy to toss out the poor stats from Fields’ rookie season, but the problem now is that he doesn’t seem to have improved much in Year 2. Much of the blame can be put on the Bears being bad as a whole, but collectors don’t really care about blame — it’s all about results, and Fields doesn’t have much to look at.

Overall, Fields’ PSA 10s tracked by Market Movers are down 28% collectively over the last 30 days, and his key Prizm Base, Mosaic Base and Donruss Base are all among the biggest decliners.

DOLLAR GROWTH RISERS

1. Tua Tagovailoa 2020 Prizm Silver PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ $325

2. Jalen Hurts 2020 Prizm Silver PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ $318

3. Jalen Hurts 2020 Prizm Green PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ $236

4. Jalen Hurts 2020 Select Field Level Silver PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ $160

5. Barry Sanders 1989 Score Base PSA 10 πŸ“ˆ $138

WILL TUA’S RISE CONTINUE? While Jalen Hurts’ appearances here aren’t surprising, seeing Tua Tagovailoa’s Prizm Silver at the top of this list might make some collectors cringe. It’s hard to argue against Tagovailoa’s success so far this season, but the reality is his mismanaged concussion situation is something to be seriously concerned about.

After two mediocre seasons to start his career, Tagovailoa has turned the corner in a big way with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle pulling down his passes, and collectors have jumped on his cards accordingly. Concussions can’t be underestimated, though, and his trajectory this season is something to monitor closely.

DOLLAR GROWTH DECLINERS

1. Patrick Mahomes 2017 Prizm Silver PSA 10 πŸ“‰ $266

2. Mac Jones 2021 Donruss Press Proof Premium PSA 10 πŸ“‰ $259

3. Justin Herbert 2020 Prizm Disco PSA 10 πŸ“‰ $229

4. Justin Herbert 2020 Optic Blue Scope PSA 10 πŸ“‰ $185

5. Justin Herbert 2020 Select Field Level Silver PSA 10 πŸ“‰ $156

INJURY DIPS: Injury scares have been a major theme this week, and Justin Herbert’s rib cartilage is no exception. A strong performance in Week 4 will likely make investors feel better about the Chargers QB, though, and these price drops could tick back up soon.

It’s also worth noting that these three Herbert cards are relatively low-pop compared to some of his other flagship rookies, and could also be a little more volatile with higher price points.
