Is Donovan Mitchell or Damian Lillard the Better Play? Buy, Sell, Hold

Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard have both put up massive numbers in the NBA Playoffs, but neither get the hobby love they probably deserve. Who is the better buy right now?

We cover that and more in this week’s Forecast:

Donovan Mitchell

After being held out of Utah’s Game 1 loss to Memphis, Mitchell and the Jazz turned things on for four straight wins over Ja Morant’s Grizzlies. Mitchell finished the series averaging 30 points and seven assists per game despite averaging just 30 minutes.

Mitchell’s 2017 Prizm Base PSA 10 is down 5% over the last 30 days while his 2017 Optic Base PSA 10 is down 23% over the same period.

Geoff’s pick: Buy

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers still wants out of Green Bay, but the Packers don’t seem interested in letting him walk anytime soon. A 3-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl winner, Rodgers added Jeopardy host to his resume this offseason.

Rodgers’ cards have been climbing steadily over the past year — Jeopardy probably isn’t a big factor — and have relatively low POP counts for someone as good as he is.

His 2005 Topps Chrome Base PSA 10 is up 381% over the last 365 days while the Topps Base PSA 10 is up 252% over the same period.

Geoff’s pick: Hold

Josh Allen

The Bills star QB had a breakout season in 2020, tossing 37 TDs against just 10 INTs. Buffalo was handled by Kansas City in the AFC title game, but Allen has become a hobby favorite over the past year.

Allen’s 2018 Donruss Base PSA 10 is up 576% over the last 365 days while his 2018 Optic Base PSA 10 is up 262% over the same period.

Geoff’s pick: Buy

Wander Franco

Some collectors were disappointed recently when Franco — MLB’s No. 1 overall prospect — wasn’t called up after Tampa Bay traded away a shortstop. Franco isn’t getting called up to the Rays yet, but fans have still been buying up his Bowman cards when they can.

Franco’s 2019 Bowman Base 1st Prospect PSA 10 is up 19% over the last 30 days while his 2019 Bowman Chrome Base PSA 10 is up 3% over the same period. It should be noted both have extremely high POP counts — over 5K for his 1st Prospect and over 9K for his Chrome — for a player that has yet to play in the majors.

Geoff’s pick: Hold

Damian Lillard

The Blazers currently trail the Nuggets 3-2, but Lillard has done everything he can to keep Portland in the series. He dropped 55 points with 12 3-pointers in Tuesday night’s loss, and he’s averaging 36 points on 47% shooting so far in the playoffs.

Lillard’s Prizm Base PSA 10 is down 9% over the last 30 days, but got a huge bump after his 55-point game. It sat around $881 on Tuesday and then jumped to $1,100 the day after his massive performance.

Geoff’s pick: Sell
