Don’t Overlook These Low-Priced Baseball Prospects
Baseball prospects provide collectors with promising opportunities through a clear sell marker at call-up. While MLB provides plenty of coverage and discussion for its highest-rated prospects, there are a number of intriguing young players with high upside that are sitting below the radar, ready to be scooped at a discount. Let’s take a look at the top low-priced prospects worth watching right now.
Xavier Isaac: 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects (1st) #BCP-145 PSA 10
Isaac, a stout prototype 1B prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, was drafted 29th overall in the 2022 MLB draft. Since deciding to forego a college career with the Florida Gators, Isaac has shown solid production levels, hitting .263 with 13 home runs throughout his first 331 minor league at-bats. Isaac’s 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects in PSA 10 is down 18% over the last 365 days, and can be picked up for less than $30.
The power swinging lefty may have a ways to go in terms of showing his overall hit tool against high-level arms, but the talent potential is tough to argue with. Picking up Isaac’s Chrome 1sts in PSA examples gives flippers a low price point for a high-upside prospect.
Junior Caminero: 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects Refractor (1st) /499 PSA 10
While Caminero isn’t necessarily a sleeper, he’s a top prospect that is clearly priced lower than his peers, which puts him on this list. Caminero hits for both average and power, and has logged over 700 MiLB at-bats, a high level of experience relative to a majority of his peers on this list.
His 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects Refractor in PSA 10 can be snagged for just $120, a number that might undervalue Caminero’s talent level and potential career arc.
Roman Anthony: 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects (1st) #BCP-71 PSA 10
Roman Anthony’s 2023 Bowman Chrome Prospects in PSA 10 can be picked up for under $80. He’s shown strong production, particularly for a 19-year-old, hitting .270 in just under 400 MiLB at-bats. While Anthony is still in High-A ball, if he continues to produce, collectors can expect next season to be one where he is featured in the news for call-ups.
Colt Keith: 2020 Bowman Draft Chrome DP Auto Refractor (1st) /499 #CDA-KC PSA 10
While Colt Keith’s cards are generally traded at a low frequency, getting in on him before his prices spike should offer liquidity as he makes the jump to the majors. Keith has hit for .299 this year and also climbed to the Tigers Triple-A affiliate, meaning collectors may soon see an end-of-season callup. His 2020 Bowman Draft Auto Refractor in PSA 10 is down 16% over the last 60 days, offering hobbyists a rare discount on a key card.
Coby Mayo: 2021 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto (1st) #CPA-CMA Raw
While Coby Mayo slipped to the 4th round of the 2020 draft, his strong MiLB performances paired with elite intangibles at the third base position should leave fans and sports card investors alike with high optimism for his future. Mayo has slugged 21 home runs while hitting for a very respectable average of .284 for the Orioles Triple-A affiliate this year. His 2021 Bowman Chrome Prospect Auto Raw is trading for just $63, offering a low price point. The card has also sold 43 times over the last 60 days, adding high liquidity.
Brooks Lee: 2022 Bowman Draft Sapphire Edition Chrome (1st) #BDC-153 Raw
Brooks Lee, the 8th overall pick in the 2022 draft, has tallied over 600 MiLB at-bats and currently sits in Triple-A for the Minnesota Twins. His 2022 Bowman Draft Sapphire Edition Raw provides a bulk opportunity while selling for just $4 over the last 60 days. It sells for $88 in PSA 10, and should jump when he gets the call-up, making it a very gradable option.
James Wood: 2022 Bowman Chrome Prospect Sapphire Edition Auto (1st) #BSPA-JW Raw
Rounding off our list of sleeper baseball prospects is James Wood. Wood, a part of the Nationals/Padres deal that included Juan Soto, is a massive outfielder, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing over 240 pounds. He’s hammered in 80 RBIs in less than 400 at-bats this minor league season while posting an OPS of .877. Wood’s 2022 Bowman Sapphire Edition was recently traded far below value (just $61, a 391% price decrease).
While this trade may be an anomaly, it could still serve as a bargaining chip for future transactions, leading collectors to pick up discounted options relative to what Wood will be worth next season as he looks to make the jump from Double-A to the bigs.
