MiLB Report: Yankees Prospect Anthony Volpe Continues to Impress

The newly-ranked top prospect in the Yankees system, Anthony Volpe has been arguably the best player in minor league baseball this season. His outstanding play earned him a promotion to High-A Hudson Valley, and he appears to be one of the next stars in pinstripes.

Jose Salas, SS, Miami Marlins (2019 International Signee)

Height: 6’2 | Weight: 191 | Age: 18

Salas has been an incredible surprise to the 2021 Bowman checklist. He has been one of the best hitters in the Florida Complex League with a .969 OPS (5th overall). While Salas has been a top performer, he is also one of the younger players in the league at only 18. A strong switch hitter, he’s also shown exit velocities up to 109 MPH. He’s yet to find in-game power in his short professional career, but he is showing signs of potential 20-plus home run power. 

Robert Hassell III, CF, San Diego Padres (8th overall pick in 2020)

Height: 6’2 | Weight: 195 | Age: 20

Hassell was the 1st overall high school bat taken in the 2020 MLB Draft, and he is living up to the hype. Hassel, over his first 81 games of his pro career, has gotten on base 41% of the time which has led to 30 stolen bases. He’s a gap-to-gap hitter who can hit the long ball every once in a while. This Padres farm system continues to impress. Just think, the potential first four hitters in the Padres’ lineup could be Hassell, Abrams, Tatis Jr., and Machado. A truly scary thought for anyone who is not a Padres fan. 

Anthony Volpe, SS, New York Yankees (30th overall pick in 2019)

Height: 5’11 | Weight: 180 | Age: 20

Season stats: .304/.441/1.056; 20 HR

Volpe has been the most impressive minor league baseball player this year. Over 86 games across Low-A and High-A, he’s been an extremely tough out. Volpe has 20 home runs and is currently sporting a .441 on-base percentage, which is among the best across all levels in the minors. He provides power to all fields and loves to draw the walk (69 walks in 86 games). The Yankees’ prospect has jumped up on the prospect boards with his performance this season — and for good reason. Volpe is legit. 

Bryson Stott, SS/2B, Philadelphia Phillies (14th overall pick in 2019)

Height: 6’3 | Weight: 200 | Age: 23

Stott, the former 1st rounder in 2019, is a player Bryce Harper took under his wing with the intention of helping him evolve into someone who can help the Phillies win. Stott is a very strong defender at shortstop and continues to show his versatility in the infield playing SS, 2B and even recently 3B. He’s had a great season in 2021 — he has a very short swing, shows power to all fields, and seems to be continuously improving with every professional at-bat. 

Luis Campusano, C, San Diego Padres (39th overall pick in 2017)

Height: 5’11 | Weight: 232 | Age: 22

Season stats: .289/.363/.881; 13 HR

Campusano is looked at as one of the minors’ best offensive catchers — deservingly so. He put on an offensive clinic in 2019, slashing .325/.396/.509 with 15 HRs over 110 games. Campusano has not slowed down in 2021 yet. However, the Padres have called him up multiple times and he has not been able to stick at the MLB level. He’s still very young (22 years old) and has plenty of time to continue his development until he gets his next phone call to the big leagues.
